The Opportunity

Tiemann Investment Advisors (TIA) is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable investment manager who is interested in working with us in Menlo Park, California. We are an established investment management firm providing institutional caliber portfolio management services and we are looking for a mid-career individual with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 15 years of wealth management experience.

We have managed this firm rather differently than most, keeping our team smaller and focusing entirely on separate portfolio management that we provide directly on a fee basis using trading permission at client custodial accounts. We do not provide financial planning, we do not sell life or health insurance products or provide trust and estate services. We just do top-tier portfolio management. We have successfully maintained our differentiation and higher margins by developing inhouse tools and growing organically rather than hiring commissioned sales team.

We are seeking someone who appreciates these distinctions and who has early but proven investment management capability who is seeking more creative control over portfolios, more professional independence and potential for revenue growth as well as control over your schedule and destiny. We would hope you are someone who either already enjoys directly managing portfolio construction and/or who is ready to level up and learn how to quantitatively select equities and bonds and manage portfolios with real discipline based upon your grasp of key investment principles, rather than simply selecting among commercial funds. If you don’t already have hands-on portfolio management experience and know how to structure, select, trade and balance a portfolio—or more than 100 porfolios efficiently—we would be able to help you build those skills and learn the tools that will enable you to directly manage a superior portfolio of individual stocks and bonds, rather than an assortment of third party products.

We are seeking someone with experience managing portfolios and serving and maintaining relationships with investment clients. You may have recently launched your own investment advisory firm or you may be ready to leave a larger investment firm in pursuit of more independence and personal growth. We’d prefer someone with superior academic credentials, a very strong grasp of financial concepts and who has familiarity with the academic literature. You need to be willing to get out and find ways to seek out new clients and help grow the firm.  While not necessary, it is a large plus for candidates who have existing clients and AUM to bring with you.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will vary based on your level of experience and whether or not you bring clients of your own. At a minimum, we would expect that you would be participating in the following:

  • Portfolio management and balancing or learning techniques for portfolio construction using TIA’s inhouse tools and investment approach.
  • Meeting with existing clients and providing them with portfolio overviews and addressing their questions and needs.
  • Developing and managing new client relationships and completing the onboarding processes, including guiding clients through portfolio strategy, asset allocation and weighting.
  • Collaborating with us on internal process including data updates, running model reviews, quarterly and annula reporting and process reviews.
  • Supporting TIA’s media and marketing activity through social media and website updates that help to attract new inbound leads.
  • Meeting and exceeding all industry standards for fiduciary activity and SEC compliance.
  • Supporting and contributing to published articles, notes or market reviews that pertain to our industry, market activity and clientel.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

We are looking for an individual with a real interest in finance, investments and markets who has studied finance as part of their education rather than having transitioned to investment management from another unrelated career area. You may have a Ph.D. in finance, economics or math, or an MBA or other masters degree with an emphasis on finance. You have worked in finance for at least 3—and preferably more—years either in institutional money management or at a professional investment firm, possibly even banking or investment risk management team. To be clear, we are not seeking someone who has only done financial planning or has a CFP or CFA certificate as their only post-college credential. We are looking for someone who might be described as nerdy but who is abundantly informed, curious and who takes their own continuing education and edification seriously and who lands more on the intellectual side of the spectrum than charismatic, yet who manages to explain complex investment concepts well to a lay person.

Compensation

Compensation will vary depending largely upon you, your experience, whether or not you come with existing clients and AUM or whether you can find new clients and win their trust. We are looking for an individual who would start out as a contractor or employee but who, on proving their abilities, may transition to partner.  Thus, the range could vary from $100,000 to $300,000 per year starting out with us, with the potential to grow from there.
