We want to wish everyone happy holidays and a healthy and prosperous new year and decade. In appreciation of our clients and their long-term hopes for the future, we make a donation each year to an exceptional group doing critical work to benefit others. This year we have selected the Earth Institute’s Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions program, located at Columbia University and headed by Dr. James Hansen as the recipient for our annual charitable contribution. In making this choice, we honor our memory of Kathy Hughes Anderson, our incredible office administrator and favorite tree-hugger, who we lost a year ago last December. Kathy inspired us to nurture the earth, and work to protect the environment and the climate for the well-being of all living things.
Dr. James Hansen, as a NASA scientist in 1986, first brought global attention to the problem of global warming posed by carbon emissions in his testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works. His later testimony in 1988 helped motivate the UN to establish the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has been tasked with studying this issue by the nations of the world and reporting their findings at Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings every few years. More recently, Dr. Hansen established the Climate Science, Awareness and Solutions program at Columbia’s Earth Institute to “connect the dots” between the advancing basic climate science being published, delayed and sometimes distorted public awareness and advocating for appropriate policy actions.
